The Angel of the Lord

 Doug Post

  1. One of the latest passions in America is the subject of angels.
  1. TV show; "Touched by an Angel."
  2. Many alleged (counterfeit) personal encounters w/angels.
  3. Indeed there is an heavenly host who are - "angels."
  4. Angels, however, referred in masculine gender – never female! (there goes the TV show).
  5. The word "angel" simply means "messenger." Hebrew – "malac" – Greek – "angelos."
  6. As fascinating as they are, angels are not the focus of discussion this morning. Rather I want to focus our attention on one who is termed "The Angel of the Lord." (expression found only in OT).
  1. The Logos was God, i.e., divine, one nature with the Father (Jn.1:1-2)
  1. Christ has always been active, even prior to His incarnation (Gen.1:1; 1 Cor.10:4; Ex.13-14).
  2. Whomever "the Angel of the Lord is" He is not your everyday, ordinary, angel J
    1. Held characteristics of Deity
    2. He is distinguished from another person of the Godhead called Jehovah.
    3. Stands in a class all by Himself.
    4. He is the pre-incarnate Christ. Let’s analyze this.
  1. The Angel of the Lord is a Divine Being
  1. Gen.16:10ff – "You are the God who sees."
  2. Gen.22:15-16 – "By Myself I have sworn."
  3. Gen.31:11-13 – "I am the God of Bethel."
  4. Ex.3 – Angel refers to Himself as God. Stephen says same (Acts 7:30-38). I AM (Jn.8:58).
  5. Josh.5:13-6:2; Jdg.6:19-27 – He accepts worship!
  6. Ordinary angels refuse worship – (Rev.22:8-9). There is more – but, here, He is Divine!
  1. His Glory is not be given to another (Isa.42:1-8).
  1. He was promised to lead Israel (Ex.23:20ff).
  2. Had pardoning power (Ex.23:21). But notice (Mark.2:7).
    1. God Alone!
    2. No one else – not even angels – no one!
  1. No creatures allowed to wear His name (Isa.42:8; 48:11-12).
  2. Ex.13:21; 14:19 – Who went before them? The One & the Same!
    1. Angel of the Lord (Ex.3:2)
    2. Angel of My Presence (Ex.33:14)
    3. Angel of the covenant (Acts 7:38).
    4. Trinity in OT – (Isa.48:12-16; Judg.13:8-25).

Conclusion:

Jesus is Lord even in the Old Testament. He is our great Sustainer, our Life Giver. He has been with his creation since the beginning. He is the One who guides – He is the One who cares (Heb.13:5). He has been true to His promises. He will be true to His promises. Trust Him Who leads you! God’s Messenger- the Logos – The communicator and executor of His Will.
