A Tough Case

August 03, 2003

This young man stood watching the life drain from the false teacher. One by one stones were hurled at him and soon this heretic was dead. The youth found great satisfaction in seeing another enemy of truth get the punishment he deserved. He would never forget the events of the day. This young man was Paul and the "false teacher" was Stephen. Little could this martyr imagine the unseen influence he exerted that day.
Consider for a moment the unseen influences we exert. Because "...none of us lives to himself, and no one dies to himself" (Rom. 14:7), our lives touch the lives of all we meet. We influence others in worship. When in our assembly we sing heartily, listen intently, pray fervently, and commune with reverence, we encourage others by these actions. However, when we fail to sing, pray, listen, and commune with all our heart, we hinder others.
Imagine that first time visitor that happens to sit behind you. He or she will not help but notice the attitude you manifest in worship. Are you aware that what you do may cause a soul to be drawn closer to God or driven farther away? Stephen probably never knew his actions helped lead Paul to heaven. Are we equally as blind to our unseen influences? [Doug Post]

All I Need

His grace to hold securely,
His light to show the way,
His love to bind me always,
His strength for every day;
His power to give me courage,
His wisdom for my guide;
His mercy for my sinfulness,
He has every need supplied.

Words of Wisdom About Adversity

A gem is not polished without rubbing, nor a man made perfect without trials (Chinese proverb)

~ A good pilot is best tried in a storm.
~ Adversities do not make a man frail; they show what sort of man he is.
~ Adversity introduces a man to himself.
~ Adversity is the diamond dust heaven polishes its jewels with.
~ Bad is called good when worse happens.

God could have kept Daniel out of the lions' den... He could have
kept Paul and Silas out of jail... He could have kept the three
Hebrew children out of the fiery furnace... but God has never promised to keep us out of hard places... what He has promised
is to go with us through every hard place, and to bring us through victoriously.

The Image of Jesus

There is a story about a man who, because of a lifetime of hard work, hard luck, and poor posture, allowed himself to become stooped and round shouldered. So, he commissioned a sculptor to fashion a statue of him in a perfectly straight position, with his shoulders back, head high, and chin up - just the way he looked when he was in the prime of life.

He received his statue and hid it in a remote corner of his garden. For several minutes every day he would go to the hiding place and contemplate himself as he once was, while gazing up at the statue. As time passed the man's friends noticed he was standing straighter and regaining his youthful stature. His progress was slow but his persistence was rewarded until finally he had become like the image he had crafted.

If we want to be continually transformed into the image of Jesus, we will need to spend time each day looking at Jesus, contemplating his person and how we can be like him. The only image of Jesus we have access to was sculpted by some of his followers. This image begins to take shape as we read the Old Testament prophecies that told of His coming. The image takes definite shape as we read the Gospel accounts.

They tell us as much as we can comprehend of Him. While we obviously do not have Jesus' power, we do have access, through prayer, to the same power source. We can strive to emulate His love, His compassion, His obedience and gradually we can begin to look like Him. Finally, "Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But, we know that when He appears, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is" (1 John 3:2). [Doug Post]
