What About Purity?

01/28/2001

It seems as if our nation is completely engulfed by a cloud of moral filth. Everywhere you look you find an encouragement to do wrong. The signs we pass, the songs we listen to, the advertising on TV are constantly encouraging us to do that which is sin against God and, therefore, not good for self, family or country. The Bible says "flee fornication"(1Cor.6:18), "flee idolatry"(1Cor.10:14), and "flee youthful lusts"(2Tim.2:22), but the world says run to these things. The New TV show, Temptation Island suggests this very idea. Regarding this TV show, Dr. Laura has said, "It’s nothing but an opportunity for fornicators to fornicate." I Agree!

Much of the advertisement we see today is an appeal to the sensual side of man that calls on him to ignore the laws of God, cast off any "inhibitions" and let himself go with the worldly tide of loose living. Pure living is not at this time fashionable. To many, moral virtue maintained among friends would be an embarrassment. It seems like the majority of people are trying to sin in a "discrete" manner. Husbands "discretely" cheat on their wives, and wives "discretely" cheat on their husbands. Many times we even find sexual infidelity advocated by a counselor who is trying to help a couple "save" their marriage. And I could go on and on with the crimes against God and man.

Where did purity go? As the contamination of morality moves into the
minds of men and women, decency moves out. Oh, they continue to keep up the appearance of respectability but inwardly they are filled with moral
degeneracy. What the Lord said of the Pharisees could be said of them
(Matthew 23:27). A pure man may be out of step with society, but he is still right and the real reason society is allowed to continue. Purity has left the lives of many. Lust has replaced love, and degeneracy has been substituted for decency. But the Lord still teaches, "Blessed are the pure in heart: for
they shall see God
" (Matthew 5:8). – Douglas L Post

ANY ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT?

- Am I too CRITICAL; do I see only a person's failure and not his good?
- Am I so CHILDISH that people must handle me gently lest I be offended?
- Am I MATURE  ENOUGH to handle hurts without feeling mistreated?
- Do I HURT people while boasting, "I believe in saying what I think?"
- Can I be completely be TRUSTED with confidential information?
- Am I guilty of making SARCASTIC REMARKS about others?
- Do I admit when I am wrong, or do I EXCUSE myself and pass blame?
- Do I excuse my sins while self-righteously CONDEMNING others?
- Are others UPLIFTED through their association with me?
- Do I follow after peace, or do my words and actions PROMOTE STRIFE?

"I Wanna Be Like... Who?"

Like Paul, forgetting things behind and pressing forward.
Like David, lifting up eyes to the hills from which my help comes.
Like Abraham, trusting my God implicitly.
Like Enoch, walking in daily fellowship with our Father.
Like Moses, suffering rather than enjoying the pleasure of sin.
Like Job, being patient and faithful in all circumstances.
Like Joseph, turning my back on all evil advances.
Like Gideon, advancing even when my friends are few.
Like Andrew, striving to lead my brother to Christ.

FIVE EVERYDAY EVANGELISM TIPS

Look at other people as those for whom Jesus died
Pray for three specific people by name, asking God to use you to draw
Them to Christ.
Tell them how being a Christian gives your life meaning and purpose.
Relax. God is in charge.
Build friendships with non-Christians. Watch for opportunities to help
them.
